The Art of Building & The CIOB

About

Celebrating the creativity of construction and the built world.

The Competition

The Art of Building photography competition is an international showcase for the very best digital photography of the built environment. It is open to both professional and amateur photographers. There are two awards to be won: the Judges’ Choice and the Public’s Choice. Both winners will receive a £1500 prize.

Our expert judges will select the shortlisted photos to be put through to the public vote. Usually around twelve photos are selected. The public will then vote for their favourite and the Public’s Choice winner will be determined. The judges will also decide which from the shortlisted photos will be the winner of the Judges’ Choice prize.

The competition is run by the Chartered Institute of Building. We stand for the science, ethics and practice of the built environment across the world. Everything we do is to improve the quality of life for those using and creating the built environment.

It is the Art of Building competition that celebrates the creativity of the industry, the passion of the people who work within it, and the impact their work has on those who make use of the final construction.

Art of Building Galleries

We have a mission to celebrate construction and the built environment. One of the ways we can do this is by displaying the incredible photographs that are shortlisted or highly commended each year at construction sites with space to be transformed into a temporary art gallery. This is a great way to showcase the creativity of construction at its source.

Negative stigma and a lack of proper training opportunities are blocking many people with criminal records from earning a second chance at life within the construction industry, our latest report has revealed. The report, called Building Opportunity: Employing People with Criminal Convictions in Construction, shows individuals with a criminal record face significant barriers to gaining employment within the industry, including perceived risk to the business by employers and fears about business reputation. We highlight examples of how some construction companies, both large and small, have already enjoyed success through hiring people with criminal convictions. It is International Construction Management Day and we are celebrating our 190th anniversary. Like us, the discipline of construction management has evolved over the years. Plenty of countries and industries around the world have a narrow definition for what construction management is. Many see it as the site-based manager of the construction process. But as the global home for professionals who manage and lead in the built environment we have a comprehensive view because we know what Chartered Construction Managers do, and what they do defines the discipline. It’s complex, powerful and influential.

In the words of photographer Riyas Muhammed,
With over 6 million traditional buildings and over 500,000 listed monuments in the UK, there is a considerable need for building professionals to understand the nature and practicalities of conservation. For this reason, we have developed a two-day course, endorsed by English Heritage, which looks at conservation for both residential and commercial property as well as historic monuments.
